More on Christian Depression and Anxiety and What the Believer Can Do About It

Many Christians experience emotional distress because of misunderstanding about what God expects of them, and their expectations of themselves. Our religion should serve as reassurance from pressures, it should not add to those pressures. However because we may not understand our true relationship to God and to life, oftentimes that is exactly what happens. Living a good Christian life seems above us and we perceive the goal beyond our capabilities. These feelings of stress and uneasiness are a result of unrealistic and perfectionist expectations. We put tremendous pressure upon ourselves to be perfect and have all the answers, because in Christ we are supposed to have all the answers. This undeserved stress is the result of that misunderstanding.

In Christ, we do have all the answers but we must understand how. The ‘How’ is the important part to understand. While we have all the answers in Christ, we may not have all the answers available to us in the present, as these problems arise. We have all the answers available to us if we work on finding them by our efforts. To understand this, we need to look at something else, and that is the real reason why we are here on earth. The external reason is of course to serve God and have a relationship to Jesus Christ. However often overlooked is the internal reason we are here. That reason we are here is to grow and to learn, and by doing that, to serve. By its very nature learning and growing involve failing, trying, and for most of us, still more failing and more trying before we finally get it right. That is okay.

We must differentiate between God, Jesus, Christianity and our walk with our fellow believers and the randomness or chaos that is the outside world we live in. I think of the two entities this way; God, Jesus, my Christian community of friends as being a master potter teaching me the art of pottery, where I am the student potter. I regard the outside world as the clay on the potter’s wheel with which God is teaching me how to mold my life, my testimony into a work piece for him to grade. The entire outside world is as the clay I am to work with, and that is all it is. As I work on the wet clay of my life, God is himself molding me by my trials and my failures into the successful person I am supposed to be. It does not matter how many times you fail, or how big your failures are. What matters most of all is what you learned from it all. God says it is okay to fail; it is okay to fail many times, so long as you learned what you were supposed to learn from the experience. Christian depression anxiety need not be a part of that circle. Learning by your mistakes is all that matters! This world is a school classroom and that is all that it is and nothing more. We are all here to go on our soul’s life path to accomplish certain training objectives, just like in the Army basic training or an advanced academy.

Depression can have many causes, this article addresses only one, and that is the burden of over expectation you may be putting on yourself. Seeking relief from depression or anxiety with medications would be wise. Your problem could be in part because of a chemical deficiency in the brain. Not all depression or anxiety is the result of emotional abuse as a child. Try the simple fixes first, that is the logical step, then go onto the more complex fixes later.

One last point; God does love you, and he loves you just the way you are right now, you do not need to fix anything. Your failures and your misses are okay with him, for he is going to show you how you can be a success at the things that you want to do. Why do I say that? Because I feel differently than most Christians about one thing: I believe God put his will for you inside your heart already, before you were even born. Otherwise, how would that explain the vast variety of people’s interests here on earth? Look at all the talents of all the people who made this world the wonderful place that it is today. We have space flight, computers, advanced medicines, surgery, more freedoms than ever before, and it is just the beginning! Who knows, maybe you are going to be the next big star to burst onto some horizon of science, literature, or social change.

Christian depression anxiety needs not be a permanent part of you walk with God. The remedy is self-forgiveness. God can forgive you, so too must you forgive your self. You do not have to be a finished work of perfection to be okay. You will always have a new horizon within you to reach out to. That is as it should be and it is very good.
