If they do not pass our rigorous standards in four criteria, we do not link, period! Those criteria are first, what their relationship to the subject is. They must present what we call a posture of authority. What that means is they must have a vested interest in the subject they represent. A doctor in psychology would have a vested interest in a self-help website on grief or fear, so too would a stay at home mom who has lost a family member to cancer or a son in the war on terror. If there is no warmth or personal connection, there is no link! Even then, that is not enough.
The third criterion is their answer to God’s call to duty. For sufferers and lay persons, they must have had the opportunity to move on to a higher place in life, beyond their point of loss and suffering, but chose not to. After gaining their ‘wisdom of completeness’ on their situation, they willingly chose to return to make that same path clearer for those who follow behind them.
For those of academic, professional, and religious credentials, they must have demonstrated a strong preference for a focused niche, and concern for a specific situation. Being a LCSW to help people is not enough, but showing a preference for helping those in abusive marriages is, either because of an interest in their heart, or from their unique childhood experience. It must be evident to us that they are there by choice, and not because of economic or social considerations. They must demonstrate they seek that tie to the community because of their internal rather than external reasons.
The fourth and last criterion they must have is what we call passion for the subject. No matter where you go in life, whenever you meet someone who is in their element, and talking about the deepest love of their life, they show it. Whether it is an animal trainer at a zoo, or someone cooking your meal tableside in a restaurant, you can tell their enthusiasm. For them, that moment is what they live for, and they love it! So too must the owner and their website give us that same energy and excitement for his or her subject.
