Treatment for Elderly Depression
Treatment for elderly depression can be a big obstacle, if we do not understand our unique needs and our unique strengths. We will look at how it uniquely affects our age group. These fine senior citizens deserve more than a casual treatment for their emotional needs in later life. We will not let life pass them by in life’s progress forward. Many of them have served in our country’s defense in time of war, and have worked hard in paid and unpaid volunteer services to their communities over the decades. They have served in rebuilding their neighbor’s homes in time of tornado, flood, and national disasters, and have taken their neighbors and others into their homes to comfort them from loss of loved ones and financial tragedy. Our elderly have worked long hours across this land in local churches, government, and civic groups to bring about improvement and opportunity to their neighbors and local businesses and schools. Many have served as voting volunteers, Boy Scout leaders, construction team workers, and school crossing guards and volunteers in hospitals across this wonderful country. They have marched in parades, been Santa Clauses, refereed ball games, and stood in the sidelines cheering children, taken others fishing and cleaned up others broken lives. We feel they deserve only the best in help with depression and anxiety when it may enter their world in later years. The vast majority has given love and comfort to their family and to all others for over fifty years, and now it is time we gave back to them. Welcome to our website, and thank your for being here. If you or a senior in your life has the debilitating condition of depression or anxiety, we want to give you encouragement and help in finding your treatment here. In your treatment for elderly depression, we will touch on a few general ideas before we get into a more complex inventory of your personal options, as we look at all your vast assets within you. Health Issues as a source for worry As we age our bodies become weaker, and we must slow down our activities. We must take care of our weight and watch our health habits more closely. The biggest thing to watch is our joints and backs. Depending upon our personality, we may see these changes as frightening and the beginning-of-the-end. This global perspective is not true and makes us see limitation where there is none. We need to acknowledge these health issues, but with a few adaptations, we can work around them. Do not let an aging body make you feel that all is lost, for there is plenty yet that you can do. You must just do it within the limitations of your age and capabilities. Keep in mind, in your treatment for elderly depression that as you age, the body may become weaker, but your mind becomes stronger, and your wisdom grows! You may still exercise and be active, but stopping from all activity will speed up the decline of your health. Choosing to be active is not an all or nothing proposition. Continued activity will slow down the decline of your body for many years yet. As a treatment for elderly depression, light exercise will increase the endorphin levels in the body and give one a sense of well-being. The need is for a little self-discipline to initiate exercise on a daily basis, regardless of the weather or if we feel like it or not. Discipline will develop it into a habit, which over time will reverse the effects of the depression. Remember the effects are not going to be felt in the first time necessarily, but are cumulative. That means the exercise will work over a longer time horizon that on the first day, so do not lose hope. In the final analysis, health both mental and physical is a function of how happy you are with life. By seeing the things that excite you and focusing on the joy you have in embracing them, you health will improve tremendously. Pets, plants and other person care as a source for nurturement Reaching out to touch others is a very powerful tool in the treatment of depression and anxiety also. Touching other living things, like petting a dog or cat, creates feelings of love and comfort in both the animal and the owner. Petting and caring for a dog or cat, or visiting an animal shelter to care for the residents there can be a big help in treatment for elderly depression. Grooming houseplants and caring for fish in an aquarium or small land animals in a terrarium can be satisfying as well. The nice thing about these activities is that they are relatively inexpensive, once past the initial cost. Finances as a source of worry Finances can always be a source of worry if you look at it only from a possible future state and purely material perspective. By that we mean, most of us have no savings, nor guaranteed source of our funds like an annuity. We receive our income from work we do or from social security. We all know our health could fail or our employer could go out of business or another company could buy them out. Any number of things could disrupt our revenue stream and we would lose everything. Now that we have said and acknowledged that, there is not much constructively, we can do beyond its recognition. If worry is a big part of your life, then treatment for you or your loved one’s depression can be to work on the worry issue in your outlook. Some perfectionist personalities do tend to worry, are you one of them? It does no good to worry about which we cannot further control or reasonably prevent. For circumstances and conditions beyond our control, we must trust God and Life to help us. In addition, for that trust we must look at our finances in a spiritual, not a material perspective. That means looking at our present, and not a possible future state. Changing our worrisome perspective can be a powerful treatment for elderly depression. We must trust God and Life to provide for our future welfare as we enjoy the blessings in the present. When we trust God and Life, we are recognizing our human state and embracing it fully. When we do that, we are empowering ourselves. By humbling ourselves in our perspective, we are empowering ourselves by using our attitudes to bring our good to us, even blessings for which we know nothing about yet. The secret is learning our attitudes control our future like a control in a car as we drive it. If we mistrust life, we bring mistrust able people and circumstances into our life. If we trust life, and enjoy the present, then we bring loving personalities and settings of opportunity into it as well. This one lesson is a powerful treatment for elderly depression, if our cause is a worrying attitude. Do not overlook you strengths! You have many assets for treatment of depression that young people do not have. Look at your self and you life in the recognition of these assets; your age, knowledge, experience and vast wisdom are powerful assets that younger people do not have to rely on to see them through hard times. Over your life, you have observed many eras. You have not only seen, but also lived through economic fluctuations, social change, and much advancement in the frontiers of humanity. Moreover, you have seen how that when human achievement pushes back a frontier, there is always chaos in the beginning. When easterners settled the West, there were outlaws first. Then later law and order arrived in that setting, as humankind provided structure. When humanity established law and order in the frontier setting of the Old West, then citizens could seek their various prosperities, safe from interruption. When computers came out, there were viruses that preyed upon our new toys we loved so much, and then came law and order in the form of firewalls and antivirus programs to protect us so that we could seek our dreams in the new digital world. When we are pushing back the frontiers of science of depression, at first there was chaos in its treatment. Now we are learning that oftentimes there are Soul Lessons behind the depression, as well as medical causes. Some of it is medical, and most of it is spiritual lessons we are to learn to overcome it. The lessons are to learn to trust in God’s plan for your life, and the characteristics of that plan. One of these blessed characteristics is that God’s Plan is self-provisioning. One of the characteristics of spiritual life is that it is always self-provisioning. If we trust God, then God will provide, and if not, he will not. The intent from God behind all of this is to tell us something about ourselves, and that is that our trust attitude brings our good to us, and that is the real reason behind the depression. The soul lesson we are to learn is the connection between our attitude, which controls, and our health and finances, which is the result. We are to learn that our attitude towards life controls the provisions that come to us. By not intervening when we fear and mistrust, God is trying to teach us the power, which lies within our hearts and minds to control our circumstances. Now let us get back to treatment for elderly depression. We were talking about your strengths. In the treatment for elderly depression, you have vast reservoirs of knowledge and wisdom that lesser younger people do not. They have not lived life as long as you have, and their inventory of knowledge and the wisdom that comes from it, is far less than what you have. In treatment for elderly depression, the wisdom that comes from life is a very powerful tool. You have seen many changes over the years, political, economic, scientific, cultural, and lastly spiritual. You have learned the value of the feelings and wellbeing of those around you, and learned of the sacredness and beauty of all life. Take a moment and consider all your knowledge of certain technical areas, your profession, business, law, social courtesy, and protocol. Now imagine how long it would take to have to teach someone all that information, and the insights that would go with it! You might well have some information within that others would love to have. Children may need your care, teenagers or young married adults may have need of the knowledge you have. Other adults perhaps could use your insight and thoughts. Treatment for elderly depression may be for you to seek a way to share your life’s knowledge and wisdom to others. You can do this directly by working at a high school, hospital, or charitable organization, or working with a church group nearby your home. You can also do this indirectly by writing an article, book, or starting a website. The last area you know more about than anyone else does is your knowledge of yourself, your personality, and your strengths. You must find a way to use your strengths and address your weaknesses, which would mean understanding your personality type. As we pointed out earlier, perfectionist people usually are melancholy, and they tend to look at life from ‘what they did not accomplish’, or ‘what they do not have’. If you look at life that way, you may need to admit and be aware of that weakness and tendency. To compensate for that you need to consider your strengths, which for a perfectionist that would be motivation and strong will to achieve things. Use that strength to examine your depression, and to take on a project that you have the strength to achieve, that no other personality type has. There are four types of personalities and each one has their strengths and weaknesses. If you can see where you fit in on the personality spectrum, you can make sure that you are using your strengths and covering your weaknesses. Self-understanding is a big part of treatment of elderly depression, since much elderly depression results from lifestyle boredom, and a lack of challenge. Depression creates its own perspective. As with any mood, the mood will dictate that aspect of life, which you see. Human nature dictates that ‘you will see what you feel’. If you are happy, you will see only the bright future and good things around you, and you will tend to ignore the bad or dangerous. Alternately, if you are depressed and have anxiety, you will only notice the stressful and depressing things around you in life, which support your feelings. You will not notice things and persons that are a source of joy and fulfillment. If you are at a point in your life where sadness and lack of enthusiasm is in control beware of this tendency. You might look for the opposite facts, as we call them. We want you to consider your depression and anxiety matter in a spiritual context to drive home a very important point. God did not give you a life damaging condition that you cannot do anything about to overcome. He gave it to you to teach you something about yourself. That something is that you can overcome it. Whatever is causing it in your life; you can rid your life of it, if you can find the cause. You do not have to live with it because it is your job, or your relatives, or you hometown economy or whatever. God wants your victory and your happiness. If you look for the cause, and you look for another replacement for whatever is causing it, you will find it. It may be another boss, another apartment, another city to live in, another husband, wife, or loved ones to replace your relatives if abuse is involved. Whatever the cause of your pain in your life, either internally or externally, it has a better replacement out there somewhere, we promise. What is missing in your life to take away your depression or anxiety exists somewhere, and God will lead you to it if you look within your heart. This critical piece of information God sent you here to find. That is the information we want you to learn above all else right now, for that is the foundation for a new beginning.
